24 Nov 2005Obituary of John Murdoch
Published in the Galloway News on 24 Nov 2005

JOHN MURDOCH, who lived in Kirkcudbright for many years, passed away in Canada on October 30.

In his early years, John lived and worked with his parents, who operated the Bakery and The Paul Jones Tearoom in the Harbour Square, Kirkcudbright.

In 1954, John decided to emigrate to Canada. However, after a short stay in Vancouver, he decided to move north to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. He had been there several months when he met Greta, his lovely wife to be, and soon they were married.

They returned after one year and settled in Vancouver, where he started work.

It was at this time that John found his real calling and started a comedy act where he painted a face on his stomach and, by moving his stomach, simulated whistling through his navel.

He entered a contest which led to his winning a trip to entertain in Japan.
John became one of Vancouver's best known entertainers, bringing his brand of comedy to thousands in Canada and all over the world as Angus McWhistle.

He also became famous for several different types of acts and stand-up comedy. His facial expressions were akin to those of Red Skelton. He was very, very funny.

John passed away quietly, after a lengthy illness and will be sadly missed by his wife and his many many friends and fellow entertainers.
