He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Hannay, of Mochrum, co. Kirkcudbright [N.S., 1630] on 26 September 1783 and held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)

Between 1785 and 1787 he built Kirkdale House in a simple classical style of dressed local granite to designs by Robert Adam.1
